Talent Shortage increasingly slows down companies

Düsseldorf, 02/11/2022

On October 12, the German government decided on a new skilled labor strategy. Part of the package of measures include an improvement in immigration policy, promotion of full-time employment for women and more training opportunities as well as lifelong learning. The aim is to attract more skilled workers to Germany and thus support the economy. Current figures from the global recruiting platform StepStone show that this is urgently needed. According to these, demand for personnel is very high despite current economic uncertainties: In September, 126 percent more jobs were advertised on StepStone.de than in September 2020. Results of a recent survey of 700 HR managers in Germany also show how companies currently perceive the situation on the labor market.

Access to skilled workers is vital for companies' survival

57 percent of respondents said that the increasing competition for the best skilled workers was one of the biggest challenges to the success of their business. By comparison, only 29 percent thought that rising energy and raw material prices were among the biggest challenges. 26 percent see economic developments and 24 percent economic policy conditions as the factors most critical to success. "The threat of labor shortage is not a problem of the future. We're already in the middle of it. In the last two years, the situation in companies has come to a head”, says Sebastian Dettmers, CEO at StepStone. "The German government's skilled labor strategy is a step in the right direction. Now we need to implement it quickly, otherwise we will jeopardize the prosperity of our society."

Economic losses due to unfilled positions increase

82 percent of the HR managers surveyed said they felt a loss of productivity in the company due to unfilled positions. In 2019, the figure was 60 percent. And eight out of ten recruiters (83 percent) also say that it is a challenge for them to find enough candidates for their vacancies. One lever - also part of the German government's new skilled labor strategy - is immigration. "Germany's current prosperity would be unimaginable without the support of millions of immigrants and it won’t be in the future. That is why we must actively attract qualified immigration in the future. We must finally reduce bureaucracy and ensure that foreign degrees are more easily recognized and that immigrants and their families experience genuine equality of opportunity," says Dettmers.
